SPECIAL DELIVERY
Too busy? Can’t stand cooking? Try these new local food-delivery services and make mealtime more manageable.
It’s not quite like the Star Trek Enterprise, where you push a few buttons and dinner pops out, but home-delivered food services are making it easier to get nutritious meals and avoid the drive-thru. And more and more options seem to be popping up in the Valley lately.
Think of it as personal catering. You order one meal at a time, and food is delivered ready-to-cook or re-heat.
Unlike meal services of the past, the new model is to customize. You don’t have to cross an entire entrée off your list because you don’t like something or don’t want it for dietary reasons. Meals are made fresh, and they’re personalized.
“You go through a list of ingredients we use and say, ‘I don’t like broccoli, I don’t want raw onions, I don’t like salmon,’” says John Stewart, co-owner of Sunfare, a Los Angeles-based home delivery company that recently opened a second location in Phoenix.
They also offer vegetarian meal plans. The cost averages $25.95 for a breakfast / lunch or breakfast / dinner combination.
Many Sunfare clients buy their food for nutritional and medical reasons – to lose weight, or to address diabetes or high cholesterol.
…“We’ve been referred to as the ‘food fairies’” Stewart says of Sunfare.
…Customers of these services include everyone from professionals to stay-at-home moms to older people who live alone and can’t get out or don’t like cooking for one.
…M.J. Conn of Scottsdale eats Sunfare mainly for health reasons.
“I thought that this could be a wonderful answer to eat healthy and hot have to spend enormous amounts of time on it,” she says.
“Their food is amazingly fresh and flavorful…it doesn’t feel like a diet in any way.”
